A Man Fell in a Hole

As you watched the above video, “A Man Fell in a Hole,” did you see yourself?

Most of us have found ourselves in a hole at one time or another.  With effort we can climb out of some of these holes, but escaping others requires help.  To whom must we turn when we cannot help ourselves?

There is one hole that is deeper than all the rest and from which escape by self-effort is completely impossible.  The hole illustrated in this video is not finances, family problems, or addictions.  These exist in the hole and make it more miserable, but they are not the hole.  The hole itself is the universal sinfulness of mankind.  This is made clear in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Many wonder why they cannot do better even when they earnestly try.  The reason is simple . . . man has a deep, nearly irresistible propensity to sin.
Many wonder why they cannot do better even when they earnestly try.  The reason is simple: since the Garden of Eden when the first man and woman chose to sin, man has had a deep, nearly irresistible propensity to sin.  The truth is that he cannot overcome it without help from someone else.  As illustrated in the video, that Someone is Jesus. “For when we were yet without strength (to change ourselves), in due time Christ died for the ungodly”, Romans 5:6.

The men who came and looked into the hole represent the different religions of the world that make demands on the man in the hole or give him advice, but they do not get him out.  Only Jesus went down into the hole and carried the man out.

2000 years ago Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came down from heaven into your sin hole for the sole purpose of rescuing you.  As the man in the hole did, you must stop struggling to get out yourself and simply let Jesus carry you out.

Someone might argue, “Yes, I am in a hole, but it is not my fault.  I’m a good person!  I am just a victim of my circumstances.” The person who makes this argument does not understand God’s standard of goodness (called righteousness in the Bible).  God’s standard is the perfect goodness of Jesus, not the flawed goodness of moral men.   II Corinthians 10:12 teaches how unwise it is to use men as a measuring stick of our how good we are, “ . . . but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise”.

No man has ever gotten himself out of his sin hole by arguing that others deserved to be there more than himself.  Only by accepting the horrible seriousness of sin, his helplessness against it, and his guilt for participating in it, can he be carried from the hole.

God’s standard of righteousness before Jesus came was the law of Moses, represented by the Ten Commandments.  Even by this standard, we all fall far short.  Here is a small self-test to illustrate this:

  1. Have you ever lied, even a small “white” lie?
  2. Have you ever stolen anything, taken something that was not yours,  even something small?
  3. Have you ever wanted something that was not yours, the nice new cars that belong to your neighbor, the money, lifestyle, and life that is someone else’s?
  4. Have you ever used the Lord’s name in vain, either the name of God, Jesus, Lord, or Christ, possibly when you were mad or to insult someone?

Number one is lying, number two is stealing, number three is covetousness, and number four is blasphemy.  If you answered yes to any of the questions, you have broken the Ten Commandments because, according to Scripture, breaking one makes you guilty of all.  “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all, James 2:10.

As long as a person maintains his innocence he cannot be rescued from the hole, but when he is willing to admit his guilt before God, Jesus will come for him, and lovingly lift him out!

As long as a person maintains his innocence he cannot be rescued from the hole, but when he is willing to admit his guilt before God, Jesus will come for him, and lovingly lift him out!

For this to happen he must understand that sin is a capital crime against God.  He must believe that Jesus accepted the capital punishment required to pay for sin, thus dealing with the root problem that keeps men in their hole.  Do you believe Romans 6:23 when it says “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”?

Friend, are you ready to let Jesus carry you out of the hole of sin? Are you willing to let Jesus forgive you, save you, and give you the gift of eternal life? Romans 10:9 says “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved”.

Pause a moment.  Do you believe these things?  Do you believe that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again for you?  Do you believe that He loves you and will carry you out of the hole of sin?  Does the following prayer express what you believe?

Prayer: “Being convinced that I am a sinner and that You alone, Jesus, can save me, I now believe that You died, were buried, and rose again for me.  I ask Your forgiveness and accept You as my personal Savior as of this moment.  With Your help I will confess You before men”.

The Bible says that the moment a person believes, Jesus carries him out of the hole.  Acts 16:31 proclaims this great promise, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”. Would you confirm your belief by praying the prayer right now?

Please contact the church if you have prayed this prayer so that we can rejoice with you, provide helpful literature, and help you grow in your new relationship with Jesus Christ.
